Inception = The Most Overrated Movie of All Time

I don't usually comment on new releases, but, as an intelligent fan of film, I feel it's my personal responsibility to chime in on the buzz surrounding Chistopher Nolan's Inception, now #1 at the box office for three consecutive weeks.

Let's get this out of the way: Inception is a good movie. Visually - an amazing piece of cinema.

I will not argue that this is a bad movie. I will, however, argue to the death that Inception is not only the best movie of the year, but also "one of the best films ever made." Nope, no way, not even close. I have already almost forgotten the movie. In fact, if it wasn't for the insane comments on boards across the Internet, I would have already forgotten the movie and moved on to awaiting the EPIC arrival of The Expendables on August 13.

Allow me to explain why Inception does not deserve the fan boy worship it is receiving.

First, the aspect that boggles my mind is that people are claiming this is one of the best written movies ever. FALSE! Script-wise, this film is an absolute mess. Act I is ridiculously long and bogged down by an insane amount of explanation. Rules are set up early in the film (basically the first hour is nothing but set-up for the actual story) and then nearly every one of these rules is broken at the end (If you die in a dream, you wake up...except in THIS dream, if you die, you will fall into purgatory, never to escape...EXCEPT now we can come pull you out of purgatory, thus negating all the emphasis we placed earlier on the importance of not dying).

The movie fails in the same way that movies like Minority Report fail. In order to get the story going, the audience needs to be force-fed way too much explanation in order to justify the fictional universe of the movie. And before anyone says something asinine like, "You just didn't get it!" Oh, I got it, asshole. It really isn't that complex; it's just too complex to be effective in a movie. I think the reason people are praising the writing is because they didn't understand the story and for some reason dumb people convince themselves that if they don't understand something, then that must mean it's awesome.

Second, the ending that people are claiming is the best ending since Planet of the Apes (the first one, not the shitty Marky Mark version), was LAME. The most cliche ending of a movie about dreams is that the main character doesn't know if he's dreaming or not. I PRAYED to every deity that I know that that was not how the movie would end and that's exactly how it ended. People, let me explain something: There's no ambiguity here. He was obviously still in the dream. His kids were the same age, wearing the same clothes, and the top was still spinning. There's no question here. Still dreaming...not interesting...cliche...lazy writing...

See, the problem is that we're so used to watching shitty movies like Transformers or The A-Team that when a decent movie is actually made, we blow its greatness way out of proportion. The same thing happened when Dark Knight hit the theaters. Great movie, but did it warrant any awards (for the living or the dead)? Probably not. People are so overwhelmed by shit these days that when they're thrown a life preserver, like Inception, they praise it as their savior. Inception was just a good movie, folks...nothing more.

  1. amen, it kills me when people heap greatness on movies that are just rip offs of other movies. Inception is good I liked it, but this shit was the matrix, dark city, thirteenth floor, james bond, modern warfare, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, and videodrone all mixed into one bag. I will give credit where credit is due, but to say this movie is complicated or just beyond brilliant is lame. Nolan is a good director, but not great because all of his movies are flawed:the prestige - the big reveal of christian bales sidekick wasn't a twist at all (I was wondering why Bale was covered in make-up the whole time) and in The Dark Knight - due to poor editing you don't know how Gamble died from the same wounds the joker had (the chelsea smile) and how that guy was burned alive on that mountain of money!

  2. its obvious you watched the movie and simply took it at face value, Cap'n. you assumed that nolan wanted to present one strict reality of the film. you didn't get the film. if you boil the movie down its really about the perception of reality. the ending is not about the top, either (and saying it did or didn't fall conclusively is pretty stupid). the ending completes cobb's emotional arc; he no longer cares about the top, he got his precious reality that he wanted. he is no longer a prisoner, per se, even if he was still dreaming, he can finally live his life. get it asshole? and if you watched the film looking for clues whether cobb is dreaming or not, you'll find corroborating evidence for both. and saying that the people who absolutely loved this film probably didn't get it and were so dumb, they just had to praise it... well, what would you expect from some dick wad who calls himself captain 69. its okay to have your own opinions, don't belittle others with different ones. This is a brilliant script, not nearly as complicated as others are making it out too be, but you have to understand, not everyone scored in the 90th percentile in comprehension. There were professional critics who couldn't follow the plot and got confused despite how elegantly the multiple dreams were stacked and presented. Those assholes were saying the movie was so complicated, you needed to be a mensa member to get it. You see, dumb people don't like things they don't understand. you got it completely wrong. you must get sick of being wrong. when a dumb person doesn't get something, they get confused and frustrated. Because truly dumb people don't think they are dumb, so by saying inception was overtly complicated and incomprehensible, it allows their egos to sleep well at night.
once again, you didn't "get" the film. the points you mention were non points. they were your opinions. and quite wrong at that. The kids weren't the same age, I already talked about the top (did you not see the wobble? wobble = ambiguity), the rules were never rules actually, they were guidelines, and no one said you couldn't escape limbo. your opinion is just that, but you need to make sure you use some facts if you want to be credible. 68 and i'll owe you one, or you can just go fuck yourself. Cuz guess what? this movie will be used in college courses in the near future. just like memento and dark knight. There is that much to assimilate from this movie. You didn't think about it much because you assumed that what you perceived was all there was to be gleamed. your arrogance is pretty rancid. What you are basically saying is that only your opinion counts. guess what? dumb people tend to have tunnel vision as well.

  4. well I am an indian fan closely following hollywood movies, I have seen Inception here in India, I wont go into details of ur review captain 69 but tell me honestly does americans have a narrow attitude or kind of jealousy accepting something whole heartedly ?? Just becoz christopher nolan is british, you think his movies have so many faults?? I wonder if any american would have made those movies you would have suck his ass by praising whole heartedly.

  5. Guess I've offended some Nolan worshippers...which is exactly what I was talking about. And to this Indian fellow claiming I hate British people...I didn't even know the guy was British! I judge people on their work, not on their nationality.

  6. wow dude, you are a complete fucking dink. i love his movies, but i sure as fuck don't worship anything. my entire comment was about how inaccurate and baseless your post was. but the easy thing to do is just, once again, use blanket statements in lieu of actually making points. why is it that you don't have a single retort to anything i said except for calling me a blind faith kind of guy? here's why, because you can't. you can't back up what you wrote, and you can't fight real logic.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE respond back with a real comment about anything i responded on. You offended everyone who looked at the movie in a different way than you. has nothing to do with who made the film, or blind worship. Do you really think people would be so enamored with his films if they didn't make sense, resonate deeply, and spark fierce debate and intellectual conversation? If you were talking about M. Night Shymalan, then i could understand you rage for all those so called blind "worshipers", but have you noticed how his movies continued to tank to the point he had to make a nickelodeon movie? I kept checking back to see your response to my comments, and guess what, you did exactly what i knew you would do: you didn't even try to defend your own position.
oh, just a quick question, who would you have picked as the best supporting actor over Ledger for the the oscar? At anytime during the film (dark knight, not inception- don't want to confuse you) did you think, ah yes, there's the same dude who kissed a cowboy?
